VERVE EARTH IMAGERY OF CFB GRIESBACH

This is a very interesting map of Griesbach has it displays 95% of the original base.

110 ST & SCHUBERT AVE. APRIL 2008, Photo #122

Looking east towards where old DB was situated.

This is good view of the most extensive development on Griesbach, the south east corner.
The old Detention Barracks was demolished by 2006. A huge man made lake is now where the actual infrastructure of the DB was and extends north towards the gym, alongside 108 St.

110 ST & SCHUBERT AVE. APRIL 2008, Photo #121

Looking south towards 137 Ave
All buildings in the south-west corner of the base to include the admin HQ, the Ofiicers' mess (reserves), etc were all levelled by 2003.

ONE OF MANY BALL FIELDS, APRIL 2008 Photo #120

Looking to the south-west.
This ball field was immediately to the left (south) of the Griesbach gym.
I suspect that this field was probably used as late as 2006 but I am not certain.
The installation itself looks still useable.
In the background, the line of trees is on 140Ave.

REMAINS OF TENNIS COURT APRIL 2008, Photo #119

Looking to the south-west.
This tennis court was situated behind the Griesbach gym but also directly behind the old aero-medical building (which was demolished prior to 2002).
Abandoned for at least 6 years now, brush have invaded the whole court.

BEHIND OLD MESS HALL, APRIL 2008 Photo #118

These are details of the foundations.
Above shows parking for a RSM and a TQ-supply tech...
The colors painted may imply an Artillery outfit?
No other clues of a unit affiliation could be found.

BEHIND OLD MESS HALL, APRIL 2008 Photo #117

Looking to the north-east towards row houses. From 146 Ave.
I have absolutely no recollection of what this building or loading dock used to be.
I can confirm that it was situated immediately behind that barrack block that was facing the traffic tech building across the parade square. It would have been roughly behind but to the north-west of the kitchen.

BY JUNIOR RANKS, APRIL 2008 Photo #116

Looking to the north-west towards 113a St.
Photo taken from front of  where Wagoneer Club was situated.
This area between the JR and 113a St is now used as a storage area seemingly for an electrical contractor.
This is a new site since end March. The place was busy with cranes and employees. Before it was a field like always.

GRIESBACH ROAD, MARCH 2008 Photo #115

Looking to the west from 145 Ave (Griesbach Rd) and 104 St.
today, an ETS (Edmonton Transit System) bus route comes through.
Note the dirt hill on the left of photo (south side of Griesbach Rd.)

GRIESBACH ROAD & 104 STREET, MARCH 2008 Photo #114

Looking to the north west.
Old PMQ's on 104 St.
Seen left of center is a dirt hill that was very popular with children for sledding in the winter... but not so popular for CFPMD staff to sprint up and down repeatedly (at times) for morning P.T.

104 ST, MARCH 2008 photo #113

Looking south.
Another view of 104 St.
Of interest, 104 St does not open on 137 Ave as it used to prior to 2002.
104 St stops at the line of pine trees and houses in the background of this picture which is where 140 Ave (Curling club) used to traverse before it was dug.

GRIESBACH ROAD & 104 ST, MARCH 2008 Photo #112

Looking to the south west.
As a reference, the old credit union would have been on the left while the Canex would be on the right.
This line of sight would pass through the Canex and would show the CABC and CFPMD buildings.
As a reminder, both buildings were levelled as of 2003.
This dirt hill is for the developer to screen for top soil in order to properly landscape the new houses built here.
The pine trees in the back of the photo were where the CABC and CFPMD main parking lote were situated.

OLD GRIESBACH CHURCH, MARCH 2008, Photo #111

looking to the north west.

This picture was taken from 102 St.
The church is still used today but not by military chaplains.
Also, of interest, the land where CFB Griesbach was located is not officially referred as such any longer.

MILITARY PLAQUE AT 102 ST & 145 AVE, MARCH 2008 Photo #110

Looking to the north east.

Detail of military plaque and street post.
Note the PMQ garages on the north side of Griesbach Rd.

GRIESBACH ROAD AT 102 ST, MARCH 2008 Photo #109

Looking south on 102 St.
Opposite view of previous post.
MGen Griesbach school is seen on the right.
On left of photo, at the intersection, the developer has added more historical plaques that denotes the history of the area. See photo #88 for more.

GRIESBACH ROAD AT 102 ST, MARCH 2008 Photo #108

Looking north.

Taken from a new sidewalk on 102 St, south of Griesbach Rd.
Better view of the traffic circle which also illustrates the attention that the developer dedicated to the military tradition of the area. This  statue is believed to represent MGen Griesbach's wife.
The PMQ on the right was "refaced" by the developer not to be architecturally at odds with the new homes that are facing and which are upraised at $450K+.
The PMQ on the left was not upgraded as no newly built homes are facing. Only the old Griesbach church stands there today.

GRIESBACH ROAD, MARCH 2008 Photo #107

Looking west.
This photo shows old PMQ's on the north side of 145 Ave (Griesbach Rd) and the newer homes where formely the area south of Griesbach Rd was an open field.
In the centre of photo, in the back, a new traffic circle is seen. This is at 102 St. (MGen Griesbach school).

NEW DEVELOPMENT 101 ST, MARCH 2008 Photo #106

Looking south.

This is an extention from the 101 St that was north of Griesbach Rd.
I believe that this area  may be where (or close enough) an outside ice rink existed prior to 2000.
The mature trees seen on picture were all preserved by the developer.
These new homes are immediately north of the old crescent of PMQ's on 101a St.

NORTH SIDE PMQ's 98 St, MARCH 2008 Photo #105

Looking to the north.
These PMQ's are inhabited by DND members and civilians alike.
They face 97 St. To the etreme right of photo is the edge of trees off 97 St.

GRIESBACH ROAD, MARCH 2008 Photo #104

Looking to the west.
Again, this photo was taken from 97 and 145 Ave. Note the street light posts.
On the left are the row of newer homes, the first to be built at the old site of CFB Griesbach.
To the right (north) are existing PMQ's.
See next post.

97 ST & GRIESBACH RD, MARCH 2008, Photo # 103

Looking to the south.
Taken from the corner at 145 Ave (Griesbach Rd) and 97 St.
Very noticeable is the existence of a residential subdivision along with a decorative "the Village at Griesbach" brick wall. This stretch of homes were the first homes (2003) there and were show homes for the many builders.

TRAFFIC TECH SCHOOL, MARCH 2008 Photo #102

Looking to the north east.
Close up view.

TRAFFIC TECH SCHOOL, MARCH 2008 PHOTO #101

Looking to the north.
This is the back of the building, taken from the old baseball field.

LOOKING TOWARDS THE TRAFFIC TECH SCHOOL, MARCH 2008 Photo #100

Looking to the north.

This picture was taken at the line of pinetrees behind the Junior ranks club.
The line of sight would have passed through the mess.

LOOKING TOWARD SOUTH WEST CORNER, MARCH 2008 Photo #99

Looking to the south west.
This photo was taken directly on the other side of the pinetree line of the back of the junior Ranks Club.
To the right of the picture is 113a St (castledowns Rd).
A baseball field still exists today.

WAGONNEER CLUB SITE, MARCH 2008 Photo #98

Looking to the south.
This used to be the exact entrance to the Griesbach junior Ranks Club. The line of trees in the back used to be edging the backyard patio.

BACK OF GYM, MARCH 2008 Photo #97

Looking to the east from the old Junior ranks Club site.
This picture offers a good view of the area today. The two baseball fields are still standing.

UNKNOWN BUILDING, MARCH 2008 Photo #96

Looking to the west.
this building is directly between to drill hall and the previous post.
Again, I cannot confirm what did this building house, but possibly again some supply sub-unit.
today, a retail liquidator is housed here.

UNKNOWN BUILDING, MARCH 2008 Photo #95

Looking to the north west.
The pistol range is in the back.
I do not know what this building housed.
It seems to resemble some RQM or a CE sub unit.
Today, a real estate developer or contractor occupies the place.

LOOKING THROUGH PARADE SQUARE, MARCH 2008 Photo #94

This photo was taken from the sides of the pistol range.
Looking to the south east, through the parade square.
As a reference, the gym is right of center.
The mess hall and the barrack block are both gone.

145 AVE WEST SIDE GRIESBACH, MARCH 2008 PHOTO #93

Looking to the east, from 145 Ave and 113a st intersection.

NW CORNER GRIESBACH,MARCH 2008 Photo #92

Taken from 113a St and 152 Ave.
Looking to the north east.
Same as previous. In center of picture, to the left of the condo building,
the low lying white structure is the "Crowne and Anchor" Pub.
Beyond that, the brown brick tower is a familiar sight: it is the Castledowns/Lake Beaumaris Fire department station, north of 153 Ave and directly north of Castledowns Transit (ETS).

NW CORNER GRIESBACH,MARCH 2008 Photo #91

Looking east from 113a St and 152 Ave.
Other perspective of previous picture.
Again, the area was an open field, bordered by brush and trees.

NW CORNER GRIESBACH,MARCH 2008 Photo #90

Looking south-east from Castledowns rd (113a St) and
152 Ave
This area includes new streets.
Previously, the area was an open field.
