107 ST & 137 AVE

Looking to the north on 107 St.
Behind the welcome sign, in the background would be the approximate area where the old CF Detention barracks would stand.

LFWA (now JTF-W) HEADQUATER BUILDING

Looking to the SSW from 153 Ave.

This is how the LFWA building looks today (from Google Earth 2009 imagery layer).

Not much has changed & the original parking lot remains.
The LFWA building is the last military outfit that remains "standing" at its original location within the old base and still serves with DND members.
Other buildings still in existence but abandoned/condemned are the old Sr NCO mess, the gym, the old CMTT school, the drill hall, one of the Loyal Eddies' digs, a believed to be the Sr NCO or officer barrack and a possible CE type office. All are situated around the parade square. The only exception is the old combined CE & base supply main building just north of 137 Ave which is housing a few local businesses and was extensively renovated.

Early, undated Google earth imagery of west side of CFB Griesbach.

On this aerial image, the old Junior Ranks building (Wagoneer Club)can be seen (left of center, bottom) as well as the McKenzie barrack block on south side of parade square and its opposite Mullen Block (north side).
At time of layer, the mess hall is already demolished while the aero-medical building is still visible (north of tennis court).

SOLLICITATION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY

As the past few posts below can attest, Google Earth can now offer "street views" features of certain urban centers in Canada, including Edmonton.
The old CFB Griesbach has been extensively mapped thru these street views which offers the latest 360 degree color imagery of the old base. New streets can be seen as well as its current new residential development.
This means that there are no longer any practical use for me to post new, up to date imagery of Griesbach.

I hereby sollicit any older, vintage imagery or photography of the area pre 2002.
If you wish to contribute pictures that date between 1994 and 2002, I will post them here along with all due credits. If you have pictures that date before 1994, they will be posted to the archives.

My e-mail is posted to the right.

LOOKING SOUTH FROM GRIESBACH RD & 104 ST

Looking south. On the far left, parts of the MGen Griesbach elementary School is seen.
Right at the left side, was the site of the old Credit Union. While the right corner was where the Canex and its gas bar was situated. Looking past was the site of the old CFPMD & CABC sites.

2009 GOOGLE EARTH IMAGERY

Excellent imagery layer of CABC & CFPMD areas displaying original street grids. As reference, the old gym is seen far left in center.

NEW 2009 PICTURES COURTESY GOOGLE EARTH

Looking to the east. The pine tree straight behind the green paving conveyer was part of the group of trees that was around the CFPMD flag pole, which was in front of building until 2002.

Looking to the east-north-east. This was taken from 108 St, in front of the old gym (where the MP shack was). Looking towards the old para mock tower. Years later vegetation growth has concealed the line of sight towards the exact area.

WHERE 102a ST AND 139 Ave USED TO BE

This is an example of today's redevelopment of Griesbach.

Where these town home units stand today was the exact site where 139 Ave was, perhaps a few meters to the east of the intersection with 102a St. It does not reach 140 Ave to its north.
These units are not oriented fully north-south but rather along a NNW-SSE line.

IMAGERY UPDATE OF CFB GRIESBACH

This is latest imagery available of  CFB Griesbach.  It is a bit outdated but still very informative of the impact on the present development of this area. The most impacted by the newer real estate development are the south east quadrant (137 Ave & 97 St) and to a lesser extent, the north west quadrant (Castledowns Rd & 153 Ave).

The north east quadrant remains mostly untouched with its original PMQ's still rented out to military members and civilians.
The vast majority of former DND buildings at the south-west area were demolished. All that remains are the roads and parking areas which pinpoints exactly where former buildings used to be (as seen on photo).

Not visible on photo: immediately south of center of photo and including the old DB site now makes place to a man-made lake.

I personally assess that construction of new residential projects at Griesbach will be negatively impacted by the present economic downturn. Even if Edmonton's economy may be doing fine despite of, the present low sales and lower resale prices for residences will definitely slow down all development projects for the next few years.  It will be a watch and see approach for what's next - if any at mid term - at Griesbach.

Once again, if you wish to contribute pictures of interest for this blog, contact me.
